1. Selection Day

 Selection Day

Hi!

My name is Alec and I am 13 years old. I am excited to say that this is my first blog. This blog will be about my experience preparing for the World Scout Jamboree, at the Jamboree and the aftermath.

If you did not already know the World Scout Jamboree or (WSJ) for short is a massive international gathering of Scouts over 170 different countries and territories around the World. The WSJ is held in a different country every 4 years. For example 4 years ago was the Jamboree in West Virginia,  America. This time around it is being held in SaeManGeum, South Korea. The Jamboree has over 50 thousand  Scouts attending and  hundreds of amazing activities. However, as you can imagine there isn't a location big enough to hold all the scouts and explorers that want to attend so a selection event is held to select those who can participate.

Before the selection we were asked to submit a ROAR (a brief introduction to ourselves explaining why we wanted to go to the Jamboree and what we hoped to get out of it.) The mascot of the UK contingent is Chingu, which is a Tiger, hence the roar. This is the video i submitted. It took ages to complete the animation at the start with over 750 frames. I wanted to add something different and to show that I was willing to put time and effort in. The amount of retakes I had to do for the speaking part would have made up a really funny blooper reel but I was pleased with the end result.

The selection Day

On the day I woke up really early to make sure that we could get to the event on time. I was nervous but filled with excitement at the same time. I knew that even if I wasn't successful in  getting one of the 36 places available it would still be a fun day, filled with activities to try out and meeting other scouts from around the County. When I arrived at the Scout hall in Bromely I signed in and then went into the hall to be greeted with activities we were completing, written on the board. I was put in a group with 6 other people who all looked older than me. We worked well together as a team while completing the activities. We did things like putting up an Icelandic tent, using chopsticks to separate the different colour skittles from one another, an assault course and other activities designed to test our teamwork, decision making, leadership and Scouting skills. I really enjoyed the session which was all morning and just hope I have done enough to get in! Fingers crossed
